MAN IN CHAIR
Playing Age: 40-50. As narrator of the show he holds the whole piece together. Real ability to befriend the entire audience. Charming, flamboyant, agoraphobic musical theatre fanatic. Ambiguous sexuality. Singing and dancing skills required but these come secondary to the comedy. Should be a Master of comic timing. Singing: Baritone/carry a tune.
THE DROWSY CHAPERONE
Playing Age: 40 -60. Janet’s diva-ish chaperone who ends up marrying Adolpho. She’s never without a drink in her hand and is quite frankly dreadful in her role as 'chaperone'. Jealous of Janet’s youth and fame she is constantly trying to upstage her. An excellent sense of comic timing with good vocal and dance skills. Bottom F with a strong belt up to a D.
JANET VAN DE GRAAFF
Playing Age: mid 20s. The stunning likeable bride-to-be who is about to trade in her Broadway career to marry Robert. Actress must be a real triple threat with very strong vocals and dance skills. Played by Summer Strallen in the West End production. Soprano voice with a strong belt up to an E.
ROBERT MARTIN
Playing age: mid-20s. Archetypal lead, handsome, honest, charming, Colgate smile, 1920s glamour. Strong vocals and dance skills (with tap) essential. Roller skating skills an advantage. Played by John Partridge in the West End production. High baritone - strong mid range up to a G.
GEORGE
Playing Age: mid 20s. Robert’s best man who has the weight of the wedding on his shoulders, a born organiser who’s honoured to be undertaking the role. Very strong dance skills (with tap) essential. True tenor up to a strong B flat.
ALDOLPHO
Playing Age: 35-58. Archetypal ‘Latin Lothario’ who believes he’s God’s true gift to women. Huge sexual appetite and boundless energy. Must have great comic timing and an enormous sense of fun. Strong dance skills. Latin American accent. High baritone up to a G. Quasi-operatic.
FELDZIEG
Playing Age: 40 - early 50s. Typical Broadway Producer desperately trying to prevent the wedding from taking place so that he doesn’t lose his star, Janet, and in turn his career. Tip-top comic timing essential. Good vocals, dance skills an advantage. Baritone with a strong mid range.
KITTY
Playing Age: 20s. Nearly-there-but-not-quite actress who has forever been stuck in the chorus line. Now that Janet is to be married she is desperate to impress Feldzieg in any way possible in order to get her big break. Quirky, pretty, ditzy, comic actress required. Good vocal and dance skills. Mezzo with a belt to a D.
GANGSTERS #1 and #2
Playing Age: 20-35. Two fairly brainless thugs posing as pun-happy pastry chefs, sent to stop the wedding. This fun male double-act, or two individual actors, must have great knockabout comic timing with very strong movement skills. Clowning skills an advantage. Strong mid baritones up to an F.
MRS. TOTTENDALE
Playing Age: 50+. Eccentric, demanding, absent-minded lady who hosts the wedding and ends up marrying Underling. Balsy actress with great comic timing and a real sense of fun is essential. Strong vocals and good mover. Played by Anne Rogers in the West End production. Alto/mezzo character.
UNDERLING
Playing Age: 50+. The put-upon Butler, who despite being constantly nagged at, ends up marrying Mrs. Tottendale. A real gent. Actor with great comic timing. Strong vocals and basic dance ability.
TRIX THE AVIATRIX
Playing age: 20-35. Outgoing, larger than life character …to be played by a black actress. Acts as wedding minister in the last scene. Must have spectacular vocal and dance skills. The actress playing Trix will also be the only female ensemble. Soul belter up to a D.
